Hurray for the new additions!
The new Bela Tarr! The new Naomi Kawase! The New Roy Adnersson! The new Tom Kalin! And the new Harmony Korine!
Now I'm excited.
Yeah, I'm definitely excited for The Man From London and Savage Grace
Hmmm, still no sign of "No Country for Old Men". I know it's getting a release, but I don't think I can wait until March '08.
Do you think maybe they're keeping it as a surprise? They did something similar last year with "Volver", screening it (without naming it) against the closing night film.
Matt and Glenn: I'm anticipating all those titles. I heard of Tarr but never seen anything by him, so I'm interested to see what the buzz is about.
Marc, I'd not heard of that title until now. I see from IMDB that it's Australian release is slated for 24 January. Whether it appears at MIFF, who can say. There's still another 16 titles that haven't been announced, plus there's usually a couple announced at the last minute, as you say.
The plot line according to IMDB:
Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter stumbles upon some dead bodies, a stash of heroin and more than $2 million in cash near the Rio Grande.
That sounds awfully familiar, but I can't remember the film or director, but set in the snow (maybe 7-8 years ago).
That's probably "A Simple Plan" that you're referring to?
No Country is the latest from the Coen Bros (Fargo, Millers Crossing). You can check the trailer at http://youtube.com/watch?v=TzRTujK1Qw4
If you're not familiar with their work, I can HIGHLY recommend checking out their back catalogue. Their blend of film noir styling, sharp dialogue and dry humour always make for an entertaining film.
Yes, Marc, A Simple Plan. But it sounds like a Coen Bros plot. I haven't seen all their work, but did like Fargo and their segment on Paris, je t'aime.
A visitor to Melbourne Film Blog (thanks Graeme) has pointed out that Time is probably a Kim Ki-duk film, and not by Hong Sang-soo. I suspect this is a typo by MIFF. I'm not going to post any changes to the list until I get verification.
Graeme also provided a link to a good resource for Korean cinema, though the link to Kim's Time sheds no light on whether it screens at MIFF.
By chance, I happened to be at the MIFF office in Fitzroy today, and was able to confirm that Time is indeed Kim Ki-duk's 2006 film. His latest film, Breathe will also be screening. Thanks Graeme for pointing it out.
Just FYI for any web-dependent cinephiles who use Google Calendar and are busily planning their MIFF schedule, I have created a public calendar that includes all films screening at MIFF 2007:
View | Subscribe | Feed | iCal
Best thing about having the MIFF schedule in a format like this is the flexibility. For example, you can use the 'Copy to My Calendar' feature to add just the films you are planning to see to your personal Google calendar. Or use the notification feature to email a daily agenda to yourself each morning during the festival. Or add the feed to your favourite RSS reader. Even if you don't use Google Calendar, you may be able to access the calendar via the iCal feed.
Any feedback is welcome as comments here.
