Cannes 2007 is Over

Cannes 2007 has finished with Romanian director Cristian Mungiu taking out the coveted Palme d'Or with his 4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days). A good sum up of festival winners can be found at indieWIRE. For me, this list is worth noting as Cannes winners give a good indication of which films to look out for at MIFF (those that make it here).

The only familiar name from 4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile is Anamaria Marinca, who turned in a brave and astounding performance in David Yates/Abi Morgan's miniseries, Sex Traffic. Hopefully the win means that it will eventually be released in Australia?

Diana, obviously it's too late for the Sydney Film Festival, but they're still finalising the program for the Melbourne International Film Festival. I'm hoping we'll see it there.

I looking forward to seeing a few of the winners and perhaps even some of the other films out of competition at VIFF in September!

We won't see most of those entries for another year or two. MIFF seems to lag by at least 12 months to the global film calendar.

Geist, I suspect you may be right. There's probably some logistical reasons why that may be so, though there was a recent article suggesting that festival director Richard Moore is aiming to get some Cannes highlights to MIFF.

Here's hoping. Do we know when the MIFF program will be released?
(sorry, not logged in to blogger atm).

Oh and tonight, 3hours of Celine et Julie. *gulp*

Anonymous (a first name, or at least a pseudonym would be nice), the full program is released on the day it is published in The Age, which from memory is 13 July. But info is released incrementally. I think there's some kind of release on June 20, but it's not a complete or final list. I can't look it up until tonight, after Melbourne Cinematheque, so that'll be around midnight.

And yes, three hours long tonight, and I only got 4 hours sleep last night; I'm not sure how I'll go.

BTW, do I know you?

Yes that was me, sorry again about anonymous.

No sweat, Geist. And to confirm, June 20 is the programme launch:

Richard Moore, MIFF executive Director will present the 2007 programme, highlighting some of the most expected films and announcing the Opening Night film.

July 12 is the MIFF guide launch, which will be available widely on the 13th (comes with The Age on that day) and the 13th is when online bookings can be made. Those who have purchased festival passports will have them sent out late June.
