The Week in Review

With MIFF approaching, I've been preoccupied with planning for the big event. French classes have resumed (term 2), and I've got lots of homework. I'm also still a little fatigued from the Isabelle Huppert season at ACMI. Consequently, my only film-viewing this week has been the weekly Cinémathèque screenings and a kids' film today. Next week: MIFF starts.

FILMS:
  • The Bellboy (Jerry Lewis, 1960)
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (David Yates, 2007)
SHORT FILMS:
  • The Frozen North (Buster Keaton, 15 min, 1922)
  • Sherlock Jr (Buster Keaton, 44 min, 1924)

The Bellboy
Jerry Lewis, as his own man, free from the Dean Martin partnership and captain of his own ship, was brilliant. I always remembered him from my childhood as slapstick, zany and over-the-top. In The Bellboy, his directorial debut, he uses some of the same trademark zaniness but with such restraint and intelligent application that it seems like almost a different Jerry Lewis to the one I remember.

Lewis' loud zany voice used to grate, but in this film it is used to a minimum. In fact he hardly speaks throughout the film, perhaps alluding to the films of Jacques Tati or the greats of the silent era such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton (the film screened after a couple of Keaton shorts). The film directly references Stanley Laurel, with a Laurel impersonator making a cameo. One gag between Lewis (whose character's name is Stanley) and the other Stanley was particularly poignant, a highlight of a film that has no weak spots and is consistently funny and intelligent.

The film beautifully captures both overstatement and understatement in physical comedy. It blends in the absurd/surrealism, self-deprecation, self-parody, subtle critique of the cult of celebrity and more. All done with perfect timing, not just in delivery, but with such skill in knowing when to stop and always with the unexpected. Not a hint of profanity or puerile toilet humour (it has a G rating).

It seems no-one knew better how to utilise Lewis' talents than Lewis himself. This film is one of the best comedies I have seen, ever. Contemporary cinema is seriously denied good comedy, and this film really underscores that. I look forward to discovering more of this great comic genius.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
I think you pretty much know what you're getting with any Harry Potter movie, but I found this one a bit tired and not quite up to scratch. The cinematography wasn't overly appealling, the lighting was too dark, there's way too much dependency on CGI, the narrative wasn't very coherent (perhaps it assumes you've read the book, which I haven't), the children have lost their cutesy factor and the film just seemed too long. But my six year old son and three year old niece loved it. For me, it was passable entertainment, but nothing special.

Buster Keaton
These films are a reminder that it doesn't take great technology to entertain the masses. That silent films can be more enjoyable than the vast majority of contemporary cinema, is a pretty sad indictment of how far we have (or haven't come). I don't feel particularly qualified to write about this from any historical perspective, but I did find them immensely enjoyable, intelligent, and funny. The gags were very clever and seemed quite innovative for the time.

Inland Empire clip

As a result of a conversation elsewhere on Melbourne Film Blog, I went to Amazon to confirm the release date for Inland Empire. I found a nice video clip of David Lynch talking about the film specifically and also about film in general. It's eleven minutes long and apparently is only available on Amazon; I recommend it.

I know it's not on YouTube, because I searched unsuccessfully. But I did find there a trailer for Inland Empire and have embedded it below. I've previously posted information about the DVD, and the latest information about the film's theatrical release (updated as information comes to hand).

Recommendations for MIFF

When trying to decide what to see at MIFF, I put together a short list of films to see, highlights if you like (currently numbering 48). My criteria varied, such as directors whose work I admire and recommendations from people whose opinions I value. I am also interested to see the Kore-eda and Imamura retrospectives, and as most of those films are on around the middle of the day, I should be able to catch most of them. I’m avoiding films that I know will have a theatrical release, but will be catching some of them, such as Inland Empire and Fay Grim.

In the list below (listed alphabetically), in bold are the films I've given the highest priority and will definitely see as I've booked tickets. The others are titles I’m hoping to see, depending on when they screen but I won’t be able to see them all. I will see other films not on this list if they are at a convenient time and look interesting. I’ve listed the film’s title, director, primary country of origin and the reason it’s on the list.

To see the complete list of films screening at MIFF (and those marked with an asterisk have a distribution), use the link at the top of the sidebar from any page of Melbourne Film Blog.

If there’s anything you’d recommend to others and it’s not on the list below, feel free to post it in the comments, and a brief reason why. Hopefully this will be of value to those who come here looking for ideas on what to see at MIFF (the sheer number of films can be pretty intimidating).

[Update: titles in red have been viewed and confirmed as well-worth seeing]

Meetin' WA (1986)

I find discussion about the meaning, nature and significance of cinema as an art-form something I never tire of, even when (like now) I am exhausted. It's nice to get a director describing his art, but often interviewers ask puerile questions. What if one artist is asking questions of the other? Surely some gems could be unearthed.

Trent kindly sent me a link to a video clip from 1986 of two greats: Jean-Luc Godard interviewing Woody Allen. I've just finished watching it and was amazed at how much Allen was articulating my own thoughts and feelings about cinema and television. I know little about Godard, but what I know is that he has or is exploring video as an alternative medium. This potentially puts him at odds with Allen. Below the Dailymotion clip, I have quoted verbatim from the accompanying article about Godard, Allen and the interview. Thanks, Trent.

As it turns out, the Dailymotion site is a bit buggy and I'm having trouble getting the script to embed their clip here, so I'm using YouTube instead, which has split the clip into 3. So, if you're interested, check out the three parts here (each about 8 minutes long), or check out Dailymotion using the link above.

Part 1
..

Part 2
..
Part 3
..
One of the least remarked upon attributes of Jean-Luc Godard is how thoroughly he mastered the medium of video production. For him Video was not a mere substitute for film, but something separate and distinct, an aesthetic platform all its own to which he brought a heretofore unrevealed dimension in his art; one that subtly informed the work he would later do once he returned to Cinema.

It is, however, somewhat understandable that this pocket of his career should be so little known, given that his extended video works of the 1970s . . . Six fois deux, for example, or the remarkable France/Tour/Detour/Deux/Enfants . . . continue to languish in the limited access obscurity into which they landed with a thud virtually from the hour of their creation. There are those in the fundamentally class-based universe of cinephilia who would not have it any other way, however. I mean, don't let's kid ourselves here. There is, and always has been, a vast amount of social comfort to be derived for Us (the cinephile class) if You (the vulgar herd) have no access to the works we get to see in the cinephile dungeons of large urban centers (after all, if We can't use film to construct a bizarro-world recreation of High School where we are no longer the geeks we once were then, I ask you, what is the point in all of this?).

So Jean-Luc Godard's video creations remain militantly inaccessible by all but the small number who've been fortunate enough to see them. And more than any of these works, 1986's Meetin' WA stands as testament to the extraordinary facility he developed with this sub-medium; a faciility harder-achieved in the 70s, when video production was a far more dolorous and taxing enterprise than it is today.

At once sublime and witty, the 26 minutes of Meetin' WA consist of an interview Jean-Luc Godard conducted in 1986 with Woody Allen, the director of What's Up, Tigerlilly and Men of Crisis: The Harvey Wallinger Story (and soon to be featured in the final moments of Godard's abortive Cannon Pictures' King Lear). The chat itself is amiable enough; certainly avoiding any conceivable adversarial notes; but this, along with the New York setting (giving Allen the home field advantage as it were) does nothing to prevent a visible anxiety from growing on the part of the filmmaker as the interview goes on.

It's as if it dawned on Allen, right in the middle of everything, that this tape could be . . . used . . . in some way he would not be able to control, that he was talking to a man who long ago demonstrated that he would not be bound to a standard not his own. Gradually, almost anticipating this development, Godard's camera moves in closer and closer, Allen's eyes dart back and forth between Godard and his translator (film scholar Annette Innsdorf) while questions are asked, the expression on his face bordering at times on open worry; like he's waiting, with only marginal patience, for some sign of what it is he's gotten himself into to manifest itself. It is, perhaps, the only occasion where Woody Allen seems as neurotic as the persona he wrote for himself was always said to be.

The Week in Review

The first three titles below were the last three screenings of ACMI's Focus on Isabelle Huppert. I'll post a separate review of Sayles' sublime all-ages fairytale in the next few days.

FILMS:

MIFF Films - the Full List

I've updated the MIFF Film List by cross-referencing the now-available Full Guide (in last Friday's Age). I found only three new titles: Billy the Kid, Glue and The Sleeping Child. There are now 263 titles, somewhat less than the figure of 278 announced by MIFF. This is because some of the screenings include more than one film. If I become aware of any changes, they will be posted here.
