The Jammed opens at Cinema Nova

With MIFF drawing towards its close, it's worth bearing in mind a couple of post-MIFF events. I recently had the opportunity to view The Jammed by Dee McLachlan. This film is based on actual court transcripts and other research about human trafficking in Australia. Filmed mostly in Melbourne, I found it compelling and relevant. Its willingness to tackle some harsh issues in a serious manner overshadow any of its relatively minor flaws and deserves an audience.

At the time I saw it, it had no confirmed distribution, but now Cinema Nova is screening it. It premieres at the Nova on Thursday 16 August at 6.45pm. The director will be on hand to discuss the film with the audience. Check the website for further details.

I don't quite get what they're doing with this movie. It's showing at Nova yet it's out on DVD this month and it's not eligible for the AFI awards? What the hell were they doing with the distribution?

Have you seen it, Glenn? Many films never see the light of day, and given the difficult subject matter, they've been lucky to get a limited release. Same with Burke and Wills, which was made two years ago and has a limited release at the Kino.

I haven't seen it, no. I intend to see it though because it has Emma Lung (who has been fantastic in everything I've seen her in) and Saskia Burmeister.
