Cannes 2010 lineup

The following are the films and juries announced thus far for the Festival du Cannes 2010, running from 12 - 23 May. Any, in case you didn't know, that's Juliette Binoche featured in the official poster. For a serious festival, Robin Hood sounds like a joke as an opening night film but then, Cannes is all about controversy and commercialism as it is about art. There's a number of titles that interest me (all of them really, but some more than others) and at least this gives us a glimpse of what might appear at MIFF later in the year. The lists below are not final - the complete lists will be available a week prior to the festival's start.

Congratulations Warwick Thornton

Congratulations to Warwick Thornton, who has just won the Camera d'Or, the prize for best first feature at Cannes Film Festival. Samson and Delilah was well received by the critics and the jury obviously took warmly to it as well.

ABC Online reports:
"The jury described it as the best love film they had seen for many years."

The Age reports:
"Thank you for believing in our first-born baby," Thornton said as he accepted the award. "I don't know what to say. Viva Cannes, viva le cinema."

Cannes 2009 - some impressive names

Seeing as Lynden Barber at Eyes Wired Open beat me to it, I couldn't be bothered posting the line-up at Cannes 2009. However, perusing the official Cannes website, this information caught my eyes: the lineup for the Feature Film Jury.

My favourite French actress (maybe my favourite actress, period), Isabelle Huppert is the jury president. Nuri Bilge Ceylan - one of my favourite directors - Lee Change-Dong, James Gray, Hanif Kureishi, Shu Qi and Robin Wright Penn make up the rest of the jury. Hmmm... it'll be interesting to see their verdict.

Jane Campion's Bright Star is in official competition and Warwick Thornton's Samson & Delilah is competing for Un certain regard (due to be released locally on 7 May).

These are the standouts I'm keen to see (in the order listed by the festival). Hopefully we'll see many of these in the MIFF 2009 line-up:

Cannes 2007 is Over

Cannes 2007 has finished with Romanian director Cristian Mungiu taking out the coveted Palme d'Or with his 4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days). A good sum up of festival winners can be found at indieWIRE. For me, this list is worth noting as Cannes winners give a good indication of which films to look out for at MIFF (those that make it here).
